Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about WA emergency department wait times

What is the triage category 4 wait time?

Triage category 4 (semi-urgent) is one of five triage categories used in Australian emergency departments under the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS). The target is for category 4 patients to be seen within 60 minutes. The times shown here are the average wait for triage 4 patients at each hospital.

What do the patient counts mean?

WA Health reports two counts: 'patients waiting' is the number of people who have been triaged but not yet seen by a doctor. 'Total in ED' includes both waiting patients and those currently being treated. The difference is the number currently receiving care.

How often is this data updated?

This page refreshes hourly. The underlying WA Health data updates periodically throughout the day. For the most current data, visit the WA Health website directly.

Which hospitals are included?

All Perth metropolitan public hospitals that report to the WA Health emergency department activity system are included. This covers major tertiary hospitals and general emergency departments across the Perth metro area.

Is this data suitable for emergency decisions?

No. Always call 000 for life-threatening emergencies. This data is for general awareness only and should not be used to decide whether to seek emergency care.

Why might wait times differ from my actual experience?

The triage 4 average wait time is an average across all category 4 patients at that hospital. Your actual wait depends on your specific triage category, the complexity of cases ahead of you, staffing levels, and time of day. Higher-priority patients (categories 1-3) are always seen first.
