Monash University special consideration

Monash's evidence, from a doctor who actually assesses you.

Monash states that medical documentation from online medical providers, without a video or phone consultation, is normally not accepted. It may be considered where the application is for an extension of up to ten days and exceptional circumstances prevented you from attending an in-person or video or phone consultation.

Launching 19 September

Start a Monash consult opens on 19 September. We are finishing the doctor-completed forms for every university. Bookmark this page and come back then.

What Monash asks for

What your Monash medical certificate must state.

Monash has no practitioner section. The certificate carries the doctor's opinion, so what it states is what decides the outcome.

  1. 01That you were unable to sit the assessment, or unable to complete the work, on the relevant date
  2. 02The date you were seen and the period you were affected
  3. 03The practitioner's name, registration or provider number, practice details and signature
  4. 04For a medical letter of support, that the practitioner has knowledge of your medical history or condition

What the same evidence is for

One consultation, three Monash outcomes.

Students search for these by name. Monash treats them as one process with different outcomes.

1

Monash special consideration for an in-semester assessment task

This is the standard application when illness affects an assignment, quiz or in-semester task. You lodge it through the special consideration application form and attach your medical certificate. The certificate needs to say you were unable to complete the work on the relevant date.

2

Monash special consideration extension

An extension moves the due date rather than changing your mark. Monash treats extensions of up to ten days differently from longer ones: the shorter window is the only place a certificate issued without a video or phone consultation may be considered. Anything longer needs documentation from an in-person, video or phone consultation.

3

Monash special consideration for an exam

If illness affects a scheduled exam, apply for special consideration for the exam with supporting documentation covering the exam date. Outcomes can include a deferred assessment. The evidence must show the impact on the day, not simply that you were unwell that week.

How to apply at Monash

From unwell to lodged, in five steps.

DeadlineNo later than two University working days after the due date
  1. 1

See a doctor on the day you are affected, or as close to it as you can. Monash expects a video or phone consultation for anything beyond a ten day extension.

  2. 2

Tell the doctor which assessment is affected and on what date, so the certificate states that you were unable to sit or complete the work on that date.

  3. 3

Collect the certificate. Check it carries the consultation date, the period covered, and the practitioner's registration or provider number.

  4. 4

Open the special consideration application form for the affected assessment and complete your section.

  5. 5

Lodge it no later than two University working days after the due date, with the certificate attached.

What your certificate carries

Monash questions

Asked the way students search them.

Answers reflect Monash's published policy on 16 Sept 2026. Monash decides what it accepts.

Does Monash accept online medical certificates?

Only with conditions. Monash states that documentation from online medical providers without a video or phone consultation is normally not accepted. It may be considered where the application is for an extension of up to ten days and exceptional circumstances stopped you attending an in-person or video or phone consultation.

What is the Monash special consideration deadline?

No later than two University working days after the due date of the affected assessment. That is one of the tightest windows in the sector, so arrange the consultation early. A late application needs an explanation of why you could not lodge in time.

What is the Monash special consideration form?

It is a student form. You complete the application yourself and attach medical evidence; there is no section for the doctor to fill in. The in-semester version covers assignments and class tasks, and a separate application covers exams.

What does a Monash medical certificate need to say?

It needs to state that you were unable to sit the assessment or complete the work on the relevant date, the date you were seen, and the period you were affected. A certificate that only says you attended a consultation does not show impact.

Can I get a Monash extension with a medical certificate?

Yes. An extension is one of the outcomes of a special consideration application. Extensions of up to ten days and extensions longer than ten days have different evidence rules, with the longer ones requiring an in-person, video or phone consultation.
