University of New England special examination

UNE's evidence, from a doctor who actually assesses you.

UNE's deferred examination guidance does not address telehealth or the modality of the consultation. It asks for medical documents that detail the extent, duration and impact of the illness on your ability to attend or perform during the exam.

Launching 19 September

Start a UNE consult opens on 19 September. We are finishing the doctor-completed forms for every university. Bookmark this page and come back then.

What UNE asks for

What your UNE medical certificate must state.

UNE has no practitioner section. The certificate carries the doctor's opinion, so what it states is what decides the outcome.

  1. 01The date on which you were consulted
  2. 02The extent of the condition and its impact on your ability to attend or perform during the exam
  3. 03The duration of the condition, covering the examination date
  4. 04The practitioner's name, registration details and signature

What the same evidence is for

One consultation, three UNE outcomes.

Students search for these by name. UNE treats them as one process with different outcomes.

1

UNE special examination

A special examination, also called a deferred examination, is a second sitting granted where illness or misadventure stopped you attending or performing in a scheduled exam. You lodge the Application for Special Examination through AskUNE with the medical certificate attached. The certificate has to cover the exam date itself.

2

UNE deferred examination after a missed exam

Where you could not attend the exam at all, apply as soon as the exam period is over rather than waiting for the result. UNE asks for the application within five working days after your last exam. The certificate must detail the extent, duration and impact of the illness.

3

UNE exam sat while unwell

If you sat the exam but were unwell during it, the same application covers you. The medical document needs to say how the condition affected your performance on the day, not just that you were ill. Without an impact statement there is little for the assessor to weigh.

How to apply at UNE

From unwell to lodged, in five steps.

DeadlineNo later than five working days after your last examination
  1. 1

See a doctor on or close to the exam date, so the certificate covers the day of the examination.

  2. 2

Ask the doctor to record the date you were consulted, the extent of the condition, its duration, and the impact on your ability to attend or perform in the exam.

  3. 3

You do not need the illness named on the certificate. UNE says the name or title of the illness is not required.

  4. 4

Complete the Application for Special Examination and attach the certificate.

  5. 5

Lodge it through the Contact Us tab in AskUNE no later than five working days after your last examination.

What your certificate carries

Facts a university can check, not claims.

Every Doccy certificate links to a verification page. This is what UNE will see when it follows the QR code.

UNE questions

Asked the way students search them.

Answers reflect UNE's published policy on 16 Sept 2026. UNE decides what it accepts.

Does UNE accept online medical certificates?

UNE's guidance does not address telehealth or how the consultation happened. It asks for medical documents detailing the extent, duration and impact of the illness on your ability to attend or perform during the exam. Silence on modality is not acceptance, so make sure the impact statement is in the certificate.

What is the UNE special examination deadline?

No later than five working days after your last examination. Applications go through the Contact Us tab in AskUNE, or by post or fax using the contact details on the application form.

What is the UNE Application for Special Examination?

It is the form you complete to ask for a deferred or special examination. UNE has no practitioner section on it, so the doctor writes an ordinary certificate and you attach it. The certificate has to carry the extent, duration and impact detail the University asks for.

Does my UNE certificate have to name my illness?

No. UNE states that the certificate does not need to specify the name or title of your illness. What it does need is the date you were consulted, the extent and duration of the condition, and the impact on your ability to attend or perform during the exam.

Can I apply for a UNE deferred exam if I sat the exam anyway?

Yes. The application covers both missing the exam and performing poorly while unwell. In that case the medical document should say how the condition affected your performance on the day. The certificate still has to cover the examination date.
